Moms of Blasians Spotlighted on Today Moms

I'm getting the word out folks! I recently spoke with the very nice ladies at Today Moms about highlighting the community of Moms of Biracial children and more specific Mothers of Blasian children. They asked me to write a little something and *BAM*, now you can check out my post on their website site title : Overcoming the Challenges of Raising Biracial Kids

I highlight how it feels to be be asked..."is that your baby" and my hope that as awareness for mixed-race families spreads, the challenges facing mothers of biracial children will become less a struggle and more a celebration of the differences that make us all special and unique. Enjoy!

I've Been Published on MomDot...Sorta

There was a recent request to submit articles on the MomDot site. Since I'm trying to be a better "community" writer I decided to submit an article titled "The "He Looks Just Like His Dad" comment" based on the hot button topic on this blog and in my life. The result? Woot! My article has been approved and is now live.

It's my first article for the MomDot site so please leave a comment and tell me what you think. At first, I worried that my article might not fit the "tone" of the site since it deals with a interracial issue. But then I figured it's more a mom issue in the sense that I wrote it based on my experience...as a mom. LOL.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that it's sharing the experience that's matters. Thats what other women...other mothers connect and relate to even if their in a same race relationship. I'm happy and proud I took a chance and submitted an article. I hope to submit more to their site....and a few others...in the future

MomDot Brag about Your Blog Day

Today on twitter MomDot invite everyone to brag about our blogs. Well of course I had to surf over. It's true I have not updated this blog recently but I still have lots to brag about. I'm amazed anyone still vists here and leaves me comments.

But I have to say, it's a great feeling to know something as simple as this blog and my kooky thoughts can have such a powerful effect on other people. That was what I wrote about during my 5 seconds of fame. I re-posted my comment below.

I love SO many things about my blogs Blasian Baby Notes and Daniels 365

First I love that their mini memory book for the events in my son’s life. Children grow so much in the first year of their life that you can’t keep up with everything…unless you have a blog.

Second, I love that visitors to my blogs form a community in some many different ways. I never thought having a biracial child would be the main connection with me and so many moms and dads. Since my son is black and asian = blasian, I have an automatic connection to those two communities. But I’m also connected to any person black, asian, white, hispanic, etc that loves children and cares about the issues that affect them.

Lastly, thru my blogs I become a voice… an activist… a face for black mothers who date, marry and raise families that step outside the mainstream norm of what is expected of us.

Viva la difference!

Research on Adults of African American and Korean Descent

Finally dammit! Pass it along, pass it along

- Nikki

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESEARCH STUDY ON THE INNER WORLDS OF ADULTS WITH AFRICAN AMERICAN AND KOREAN HERITAGES

This is an invitation to participate in a research study designed to explore the inner worlds of adults with African American and Korean heritages. My name is Liz Bradshaw and I am an African American and Korean doctoral student in Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University and this research is part of my dissertation.

I am seeking potential participants at least 18 years of age with multiple heritages who have one parent who identifies as African American and another who identifies as Korean. Participation will involve being interviewed about your experiences as an individual of African American and Korean descent.

By conducting this study, I hope to give voice to the stories of people of African American and Korean descent, stories that have often been silenced or neglected in the past. If you are interested in participating in this study and would like to learn more, please contact me by email (elizabeth.bradshaw@ wmich.edu) to receive additional information. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Liz Bradshaw

Babies at Work Pilot Programs

I really hope that programs like this one become more common. You should not have to sacrifice and be forced to make a choice in between your work or family.

Babies-at-Work Pilot Programs

The Parenting in the Workplace Institute is currently launching an initiative to set up pilot baby programs in organizations. The program is free to participating businesses. According to Babies in the Workplace, the program has proved successful for every organization that has taken it on, including law firms, credit unions, government agencies, and management consulting firms.

Businesses that sign up for the program will receive the following resources free of charge: a detailed baby program policy and legal waiver forms for participants; free copies of their books about babies-at-work programs; template documents for disseminating information about the program to personnel; and assistance in promoting the program to the public and the media.

The first several mothers to participate in each company's pilot will receive a high-end lactation program provided by LifeCare.

To find out more, please visit www.babiesatwork.org or contact Carla Moquin of the Parenting in the Workplace Institute at (801) 897-8702 or carla@babiesatwork.org.

An Asian Type of Dora?

I just discovered this show this morning...why am I the last to know about these things?!

Ni Hao Kai Lan

They speak chinese so kids can learn. Daniel is amazed by it for some reason. I think it's the colors and music. He's big on seeing and hearing.  Wonder if he'll learn some Chinese.  I wonder if they'll make a korean version. Interesting.
