Sharing Blasian Parenting Advice with Huggies Fans

I was recently invited into the Huggies Little Mover Ambassador program. One of the fun things ambassadors get to do while in the program is participate in a "Naptime Chat" with other moms and dads on the Huggies Facebook fan page. Well, tomorrow is my turn to co-host a "Naptime Chat". Woot!

Please join me from 1:30 - 3:30 (CMT)/ 2:30 - 4:30 (EST) to talk about all things baby..and toddler :) While I may not be the first black mom to represent the Huggies brand, I bet ya'll I'm the first one of a blasian child. I'm excited to give a face to my community and share my parenting "wisdom" :)

I'd love to see some familiar faces supporting me while I do my thang. Where's my Asian & Black families at? Roll Call! Come keep me company, ask some questions and share your parenting stories. Hope to see you there.

Wordless Wednesday - From Then To Now

My son will have his 2nd birthday this weekend. As I looked back over the last 2 years of photos I'm amazed at how much things have changed...for him and for myself.

When he was just 1 day old. I was so scared and worried about the future. I promised him that I would be a good mom, always there for him and to love him forever.

Nearly 2 years later, my son had grown into an amazing little boy. I have grown more confident in my role as his mom. I still promise to always be there and love him forever

Father's Day Potty Gift

As you know we've been doing the potty training thing. I confess potty training it's an easy task. There's a lot of asking, checking, sitting and waiting. Sometimes there's even some fighting and crying from both sides. It's frustrating when you just miss the signals and end up with poo in diaper instead of the potty. LOL. But things are about to change. Check out the video from today

As you can see my son gave me a clear "hint" he wanted to go potty. LOL. I was confident my son already knew how to go "potty" and it was just a matter of time. I'm glad I didn't give up or put it off till later.

After I took his hint and removed the diaper so he can go potty...he went potty and made poo poo. I think this is the only time all parents get excited about poo poo. I was so proud. I thought about taking a photo but decided to respect my son privacy. After all I had video. LOL. Happy Father's Day everyone!

Making a Dad for Father's Day

Today when I went to pick my son up from daycare I was given a surprise. Now you'd think by now I'd know the daycare does something for the "holidays". Nope, totally clueless. So when I was told that my son should get his Dad I was dumbfounded for a minute. I was like...His Dad?! Where?! And how did he get in?!

Apparently the joke was on me cause they were talking about a paper "dad" my son made as a gift for his...ummm...dad. As I looked at my son's drawing I started to laugh. First thing I noticed is that my son's "dad" was a bit pale. I mentioned that maybe we can color the skin...no go...they said no. Hmm. I'm guessing they're guessing my son's dad is light skin or something. The daycare never asked and I never offered the info.

Once back home I took a closer look at the drawing. Oddly enough so did my son. I thought it was funny that "daddy" seemed to have "asian" eyes and was painted yellow and black. I mentioned to my son that those are the colors of his parents. I don't think he believed me.

As we stood there gazing at "daddy" I started wondering. What will happen next year, and the year after that and the year after that. How will my son deal/feel/cope with making things for a father who's not in his life for "father's day"?!

Conflicting Advice On Care of a Uncircumcised Penis

So the pediatrician wanted to talk about my son's uncircumcised penis. Ummm, ok. The doctor felt I should have started retracting his penis already. Huh?! But all the books and experts said to leave it alone. The doctor didn't agree and said I should now start slow pulling it back daily.

I left the doctors office confused. In the West Indies they do start the retraction process while a baby is months old. Here in America they dont. I chose to do things the American way but my Hispanic pediatrician seems to be of the mindset as my culture.

So now I'm sitting at home just a bit peeved. I already went through a fight to not get him circumcised. Why can't people leave my son's penis alone? Now this doctor says I have to manually..errr...ummm..you know! I'm so not cool with the idea.

So I go online to see what the "experts" are saying and on the Healthy Children site in the article "Care for an Uncircumcised Penis" the same "hands off" advice stands. I found the same on the iVillage pregnancy and parenting site. Most advice seems to be it will happen naturally or because of my son's own...errr...manual exploration.

So now I'm back where I started with basic penis care, no extra handling, and hope it's the right choice. I kinda feel with all the touching and grabbing my son does to his little penis he's got the retraction issue covered.

Swollen Eye Leads to a Doctor's Visit

This week I noticed that one of my son's eye was a bit red. At first I thought maybe it was cause he didn't take his nap or something. But the next day the eye was more red and starting to swell. I showed it to the daycare and asked if anything happened? Did he get hit in the eye or something? They felt he might have allergies and they'll keep a watch. By Friday is was worse so I planned a visit to my son's pediatrician first thing Saturday morning since they're closed on Fridays

Even though we went early in the morning there was still bit of a wait before we saw the doctor. As I sat there tweeting and worrying what could be the eye issue, my son wandered around the waiting room and watched cartoons.

Finally we saw the doctor and after she poked, peeked and examined what was the verdict? A eye infection caused by dirt! The doctor felt he probably touched something dirty and then rubbed his eye. She said with some antibiotics should be cleared up with a week. Whew! As I breathe a sigh of relief I noticed that the doctor was still talking. Hmm

Apparently something else caught her attention...my son's uncircumcised penis. Huh. It's best I leave that story for another blog. For now my son's eye will be back to normal soon and I'm happy :)
