Supporting Target and Breastfeeding

Bashing Target has become the new pastime. The Target brand has now become a target (pun intended). I've tried to keep out of the "politics" of it but really it's all getting to be a bit much. All the boycotting and anti Target blogs, tweets and online site and groups are giving me a headache.

What's the issue? In a Harper Woods, Michigan local Target store a nursing mom was told by store security that nursing was illegal and she had to leave the store. From there some type of back and forth discussion happened between the family and security till finally the cops were called and the couple "forcefully" escorted out the store.

Target soon after made a public apology and clarified their breast feeding policy, which supports a mothers right to nurse. But still there's drama. Why? I dunno.

On my end as a nursing mother I still support Target as a brand and will continue to shop there. I think working with Target, a national company, to find ways of educating their employees from executive level to stock room person is better then bashing.

Is enforcing laws on breastfeeding needed? Absolutely but so is educating about these same laws. Lets try that first before we pull out the torches to burn a company down. Sometimes I wish we could resolve conflicts without things getting ugly don't you?

special thanks to that_danielle for giving me this blog idea

I agree. I have tried to stay clear of the anti-Target conversation b/c I feel there are a few questions that need to be answered before I can rightly say that Target was out of line. Do I support breastfeeding? By all means. Do I think the guard was wrong? Yes I do. However, I can't judge Target for the ignorance of one of their employees. What I do think needs to happen is that companies need to educate and train their employees in being more breastfeeding friendly. Great post!

I have had wonderful experiences at my two local Target stores when I needed to breastfeed. The employees were wonderful. I did have an issue with a particular airline and breastfeeding but have come to realize that I didn't want to punish/tarnish the company bc of that 1 incident. I gave them another try and they redeemed themselves. I agree we must educate and stand up but not trash a company unless it is really necessary to get the point across.

WOW! I hadn't heard about this. I will say that Target is my absolute favorite store - EVER. I think this security guard was wrong and needs educated. Maybe they should do an education class throughout the whole company on Breastfeeding rights. Maybe all stores should.
When I was in Target once, my newborn was frantic and wanted to nurse. I took off towards the fitting rooms (thinking I could duck in and nurse) and I didn't even have to ask, the women on duty just pointed to the back and said "go ahead, that's what they're there for"! How supportive!!

Quiskaeya, Glad we share the same thought about things

Mami2Mommy, How great that you found a way to work with that airline and had a better second experience.

Kasey, like you I LOVE Target. LOL. I agree about the breastfeeding education classes. Companies need to start having those.
